Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Reiki?

The word Reiki means universal life energy. It is believed that this energy may become impeded as a result of illness. The purpose here is to restore balance to the flow of energy within and around your body. In this gentle treatment the practitioner channels energy by resting their hands on or near specific body locations corresponding to the major organs, energy centers and endocrine glands.

2. What is Therapeutic Touch?

Therapeutic Touch is founded on a theory that the human body, mind, emotions and intuition form a complex, dynamic energy field. This energy field is governed by pattern and order. The guiding principles are similar to other energy-related forms of therapy, in that the focus of the practitioner’s effort is on unblocking energy concentrated over the affected areas of discomfort in your body. The therapy typically involves holding the hands two to six inches away from the individual’s energy field while moving the hands from the head to feet in a rhythmical and symmetrical manner. Depending on your therapist and your preference, some touch may be involved.

3. Who provides the services?

Your volunteer therapist is a recognized Level 2 (min) Reiki practitioner and/or a recognized practitioner with the Therapeutic Touch Network of Ontario. He/She has completed a set number of courses with a recognized teacher, has practiced for a minimum of one year, and has signed a code of ethics. Your therapist is also a trained volunteer with Hospice Toronto and has undergone a detailed screening, interview and training program in hospice work.

4. What are some of the benefits of complementary therapy?

The complementary therapies offered by Hospice Toronto complement the client/caregiver’s current care plan and are meant to be gentle and relaxing for the mind, body and soul. Complementary therapies can support a wide range of issues, including: pain, anxiety, depression, insomnia, restlessness, tension, etc. They are not curative treatments and do not replace conventional medical practices.

5. What information will I be asked to provide?
